जब आप अपनी car में बैठते हैं तो सबसे पहला काम, seat belt लगाने के बाद, key को ignition switch में डालना होता है ताकि engine start हो सके।
जैसे ही switch on किया जाता है, battery और starter motor के बीच का electric circuit पूरा हो जाता है।
Starter motor, starting system का एक important element है। ये engine को proper rpm तक पहुंचने में मदद करती है ताकि engine अपनी खुद की power पर चलना शुरू कर सके।
Starter motor, basically electrical energy को mechanical energy में transform करती है।
Starter motor flywheel से जुड़ी हुई होती है, जो आगे motion को crankshaft तक transmit करती है। अब engine cylinders के अंदर combustion cycle शुरू हो जाती है, इसलिए starter motor disconnect हो जाती है।
अब देखते हैं engine के अंदर क्या होता है, एक common 4-Stroke Engine के example से।
A four-stroke engine efficiency और perfect synchronization का एक बेहतरीन example है। ये अपने combustion chambers के अंदर होने वाले explosions को motion में convert करता है। इस engine का मुख्य लक्ष्य ये होता है कि energy को use करके movement create किया जाए और इसे wheels तक transfer किया जाए, ताकि vehicle चल सके।
ये सब कुछ cylinder के अंदर होता है। Cylinder में combustion chamber होता है, जहां explosions होते हैं।
Basically, cylinder वो space है जिसमें piston travel करता है। Piston का purpose होता है कि cylinder में expanding gas से force को crankshaft तक transfer करे, piston rod या connecting rod के जरिए। इस तरह piston की back-and-forth linear motion circular motion में बदल जाती है, जो wheels को power देती है।

पहला stroke: Intake

दूसरा stroke: Compression
इस stage में intake और exhaust दोनों valves closed होते हैं, और piston chamber में ऊपर की ओर move करता है। इससे fuel-air mixture compress होकर अपनी volume लगभग 10 times घटा लेता है। इस point पर pressure अचानक बढ़ जाता है क्योंकि air और fuel molecules एक साथ compress होकर आपस में collide करते हैं और temperature बढ़ा देते हैं। अब हम ready हैं explosion के लिए!
तीसरा stroke: Combustion और Expansion
Compression stroke के top पर SPARK PLUG fire करता है, जिससे compressed air-fuel mixture ignite हो जाता है। इससे एक जोरदार explosion होता है! Fuel जलने पर expand होता है, जिससे cylinder के अंदर pressure बढ़ता है और piston को नीचे की ओर push होता है। ये downward motion, crankshaft को rotate करता है, जिससे explosion की energy rotary motion में convert हो जाती है।
अब चलते हैं चौथे और आखिरी stroke की तरफ, जिसे कहते हैं: Exhaust.
Exhaust stroke के दौरान piston एक बार फिर ऊपर की ओर जाता है जबकि exhaust valve खुला रहता है। इस action से burnt air-fuel mixture exhaust valve के जरिए बाहर निकल जाता है।
अब 4-stroke cycle complete हो जाती है, लेकिन यहीं खत्म नहीं होता। 6000 rpm की speed पर ये cycle प्रति सेकंड लगभग 50 बार repeat होती है, जिससे हर cylinder के अंदर प्रति सेकंड करीब 200 explosions होते हैं।
